Fillings no longer have to be dark and obvious. Old amalgam/mercury fillings are a thing of the past at Valley Fair Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Swathi places only white fillings made of durable composite resin.
Amalgam fillings derive their dark color from a mix of metals including mercury. Though the ADA has determined that amalgam fillings are safe, Dr. Swathi chooses not to take chances with her patients’ health. Our San Jose general and cosmetic dentistry practice uses tooth-colored fillings to restore teeth in a healthy and naturally beautiful way.
Tooth-colored fillings are less obvious, especially on teeth that show when you smile. In addition to being a more attractive choice, they’re also a longer lasting choice. Metal fillings tend to expand and retract with heat and cold, and over the years can break, fall out, or cause teeth to crack. This means you must return for a new filling on the affected tooth.
The strong composite resin used to create tooth-colored fillings does not react to different temperatures. This inert material bonds with the tooth for a restoration that stands the test of time.
If you have old metal fillings, don’t be alarmed. Amalgam fillings are safe and if they haven’t worn out, there’s no need to replace them immediately. However, if your smile has dark fillings, and you’d like to enjoy an all-white smile again, ask about replacement. Dr. Swathi can replace old amalgam fillings with new tooth-colored composite resins, or with porcelain inlays and onlays.
